Parliamentary Elections In France End With Unexpected Result

The success of the left and Macron's party.

The New Popular Front (NPF) coalition of left-wing parties has won the second round of French parliamentary elections and won 182 seats in the National Assembly, according to official data from the country's Interior Ministry, RFI reports.

Second place went to President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition "Together" (168 seats), while the far-right "Rassemblement Nationale" (RN) of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella came third with 143 seats.

The turnout in the election was 66.63 per cent.

However, no political force managed to gain a majority in parliament. There are 577 deputies in the National Assembly, 289 seats are needed for a majority.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is to submit a letter of resignation to Emmanuel Macron. Making the announcement on Sunday night, he made it clear that he was ready to continue in office in light of the political uncertainty that has arisen since the election.

Macron has not yet made any official comment.

"Rassemblement Nationale" came first in the first round and had hoped for a high result in Sunday's vote, but the left and Macron's supporters joined forces ahead of the second round to prevent a far-right victory.
