‘What Are They Doing, Those Beasts? They Knew Perfectly Well There Were Children Here’

The workers of the Kyiv hospital emotionally spoke about the first minutes after the strike.

Russia committed another war crime by striking the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv. It treated seriously ill children from all over Ukraine. The scale of the damage that Russia caused is hard to even comprehend.

During the Russian attack, some children were undergoing dialysis, and it is also known that two operations were ongoing. Channel 24 host Oleh Bilousov, who is at the scene, spoke with the workers of Okhmatdyt. They told in more detail what happened during the strike.

What happened after the strike on Okhmatdyt

The search and rescue operation on the hospital grounds continues. More and more concerned Kyiv residents are joining in the clearing of the rubble and helping in every way possible on the spot. The Russians deliberately targeted the hospital, knowing that there were a huge number of sick children, their parents and staff there.

— I just went outside and heard a whistle (referring to the whistle of a missile – Channel 24), someone was shouting that missiles were being shot down. The sky was black, everything was booming. And then it hit our 10th floor. I thought that half the establishment would be blown away, that everything would collapse. There was terrible smoke, all the people were running, shouting. It was very scary... What are they doing, those beasts? They knew perfectly well that there were children here. A mother ran up to me and said that she had a child in intensive care. She asked: “What should I do, where should I run?”, Mrs. Vera, the hospital cleaner, shared her emotions.

Luckily, the children were evacuated in time, so Mrs. Vera tried to calm the mothers. Another woman with a child in her arms said that she left the building to walk around the grounds with the kids. She and the 3-year-old child miraculously survived.

— This is a huge grief. In the building that suffered the most, there were children in very serious conditions. There is a toxicology department there, the children were on dialysis. At that very moment, an air raid alarm started, but as far as I understand, it is impossible to interrupt the dialysis process, — explained Oleh Yanchuk, a pediatric surgeon. At the same time, the Russians claim that the alleged strike on Okhmatdyt is allegedly a consequence of the work of the Ukrainian air defense, which shot down the missile. Although the videos of the strike, which were published online, refute the blatant lies of the occupiers. The Russian missile was flying straight to the hospital.
