Bach may be replaced by a harsh critic of dictatorships.
International Athletics Federation President Sebastian Coe may become the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) instead of Thomas Bach, who has announced his resignation from the post, Reuters reports.
Sebastian Coe, Bach's most likely and influential successor, said at his press conference that he would "seriously consider" running for the IOC president's chair.
"I've always made it clear that if the opportunity (to become IOC chief - ed.) came up, I would obviously seriously consider it. And the opportunity has already arisen," said International Athletics Federation president Sebastian Coe.
67-year-old Briton Sebastian Coe has a huge sporting and organisational experience: two-time Olympic champion in the 1500m race, the main role in the organisation of the 2012 London Olympics, management of the National Olympic Committee of Great Britain.
Sebastian Coe strongly opposes the participation of Belarusians and Russians in international competitions (even in neutral status) because of the war in Ukraine and internal political repression.
Under Coe, the International Athletics Federation exposed the cooperation of the former president of the organisation, Lamine Diack, in covering up positive doping samples of Russian Olympic athletes.
The election of the IOC president will be held in March 2025.
