Kyiv Is Changing The Game

On the main goal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.

Many people wonder what the strategic goal of the operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region and other border regions of the Russian Federation is. The positive moral and psychological effect is obvious, but what does this give Ukraine in practice?

It seems to me that the successful consolidation of Ukrainian troops on the “core” Russian territory provides Kyiv with a much stronger political position both within its own country and at the international level.

In the context of ongoing mobilization, it is much easier to motivate troops to conduct daring offensive actions than to motivate them to conduct trench warfare in those areas of the front where it has been going on for years. Moreover, on Russian territory, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are conducting military operations in the forests, which they are very good at. Examples of victories near Kyiv and in the Kharkiv region prove this.

And most importantly, a trench war of attrition according to the rules imposed by the Russian Federation does not add any positive to the strategic position of Ukraine. Kyiv needs to change the game, even at the cost of possible escalation. Transferring the war to the territory of the Russian Federation could be exactly the change that would give Kyiv additional arguments in any near-war negotiations. Appeals to international law and justice are clearly not enough in the modern world.
