Dyumin's appointment to the Kursk region says a lot.
Vladimir Putin's former bodyguard and current Secretary of the State Council Alexander Dyumin has been appointed coordinator of the Russian army's actions in the Kursk region, Z-channels reported on Tuesday.
The information that was published the previous evening by the channel “Upravlenie Z Kursk” was confirmed on Tuesday by Rybar and VGTRK military correspondent Alexander Sladkov.
According to pro-war channels, Dyumin had “received instructions” from Putin the day before and was sent to the Kursk region, where Russian troops have been unable to dislodge the invading Ukrainian Armed Forces units for the seventh day in a row.
Colonel General Dyumin was sent to Kursk with “emergency powers”, Sladkov writes. He adds that Dyumin is Putin's man, and will not allow himself to deceive the president.
Dyumin's appointment de facto means the removal of Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov from command of the troops in the Kursk region, who, according to Bloomberg, knew from intelligence about the impending invasion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but did not inform the president.
At an emergency meeting with Putin on August 7, Gerasimov estimated the number of Ukrainian formations in the Kursk region at only a thousand people, although at that time pro-government media already named a much larger number.
Dyumin's appointment is “a sign that the security forces were unable to solve the problems of coordination on their own and without intervention from Moscow,” writes Rybar. Earlier, the Kremlin declared a counter-terrorism operation (CTO) in the Kursk region, within the framework of which, according to Russian law, the head of the FSB (Alexander Bortnikov) is responsible for coordinating the actions of the security forces.
Dyumin worked in Putin's security during the latter’s first and second presidential terms, and in 2008, when Putin became head of the government, Dyumin became his personal adjutant. In 2012, Dyumin became deputy head of the presidential security service of the Federal Protective Service, later worked in the Ministry of Defense, and in 2016 was appointed governor of the Tula region. In 2023, during the Wagner PMC mutiny, Dyumin was tipped for the post of Minister of Defense.
