This is the first case of their use on the territory of the Russian Federation
Ukrainian troops used British Challenger 2 tanks during the offensive in the Kursk region of Russia.
Sky News reports it.
According to the publication, if this information is confirmed, this will be the first case of the use of British tanks operated by Ukrainian soldiers in combat operations on the territory of Russia.
The Ministry of Defence in London declined to comment on the details of the operation. The AFU did not comment.
However, the UK confirmed that Ukraine is free to use British weapons on the territory of Russia, according to the government's policy. The source of Sky News reported that among them were Challenger 2 tanks, and made it clear that they were used during the Ukrainian offensive that began on August 6.
Details of how and when Ukrainian forces deployed Challenger 2 tanks in the Kursk region are not yet clear. The number of tanks that could be involved is also unknown.
However, the powerful 82nd Air Assault Brigade of Ukraine is a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which has been operating British main battle tanks since last year. The participation of the brigade units in the Kursk offensive operation was confirmed.
Challenger 2 Tanks
The UK agreed to hand over 14 of its Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine in January 2023, prompting Germany and the US to follow suit and deliver their versions.
One of the British tanks was shot down during the hostilities in Ukraine in September last year - this was the first time that Challenger 2 was disabled during active hostilities.
The Challenger 2 tank, which has been in service since 1994, weighs 62.5 tons and is armed with a 120 mm rifled gun and a 7.62 mm machine gun.
