Politico: Biden ‘Open’ To Sending Missiles With Range Up To 400 Kilometres To Ukraine

They can be launched from F-16s provided to Kyiv.

US President Joe Biden is ‘open’ to transfer to Ukraine long-range cruise missiles Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), which can be launched from F-16s provided to Kyiv, Politico writes, citing knowledgeable sources among high-ranking US officials.

The presence of such missiles in the arsenal will allow the Ukrainian military to hit targets at a distance of about 400 kilometres, the publication said.

The White House's readiness to provide Kyiv with the JASSM came amid the AFU's successful operation in Kursk region, which made Vladimir Putin uncomfortable and forced him to withdraw part of the Russian army from Ukraine, Politico writes.

No final decision has been made on supplying these missiles, but according to one of Biden's administration officials, the White House is now working out the ‘intricate details’ of the matter. In particular, it will be necessary to make sure that the aircraft that Ukraine has in stock, including F-16s, will be able to use the JASSM. Two of the publication's sources said that the Pentagon is already working with the Ukrainian side on these technical points.

The US military department itself did not comment on possible JASSM deliveries to Ukraine, saying only that it was considering ‘a number of options to meet Ukraine's security needs’.

In April, US President Joe Biden signed a document allocating $61bn of emergency aid to Ukraine. Among other things, the new tranche included long-range ATACMS missiles, which Kyiv has long been requesting.

However, the maximum range of these missiles is 300 kilometres. If the AFU receives JASSM, it will be able to hit Russian targets at a much greater distance. Some modifications of the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile are capable of hitting at a distance of 980 kilometres, but their delivery to Ukraine is not yet under consideration.
