Official Who Supervised BelNPP Construction Took bribes In Form of Tickets To Serbian Cousine Restaurant

Amazing greed.

The trial of the former Deputy Minister of Energy of Belarus Mikhail Mikhadziuk has begun in the Leninsky District Court of Minsk.

The former official is accused of committing a particularly serious corruption crime and faces up to 15 years in prison, the Belarusian state media report.

The prosecution believes that Mikhadziuk took bribes during the implementation of the most important investment projects of the Ministry of Energy, which he supervised. The deputy minister lobbied for the interests of a private company when purchasing European equipment for state enterprises through the ministry's system.

According to the investigation, Mikhadziuk received bribes totalling 35,000 euros in several stages from 2018 to December 29, 2023. He also accepted Serbian dinars in Minsk for a favorable decision on issues within his competence.

In addition, as an illegal reward, Mikhadziuk received from a commercial company "two tickets" for dinner at a Serbian restaurant, a tourist trip to a Serbian ski resort.

After the charges were announced, the former official agreed to testify in court and stated that he fully admits his guilt and repents. He recalled that he worked in the industry for 47 years, he has awards from the country's top leadership, from influential international structures, including specialized ones.

At the beginning of the court hearing, the defence asked to change the measure of restraint for Mikhadziuk due to his chronic disease. In response, the prosecutor recalled that the former official is being tried under an article that provides for 15 years of imprisonment, and there is a medical unit in Pre-trial Detention Center No. 1. The court ultimately rejected.

The judge also did not grant the motion to remove media employees from the trial. The trial was open.
