15-Year-Old Schoolgirl Sent To Closed Specialized Boarding School Over ‘Insulting’ Police Officer

For two years.

A 15-year-old schoolgirl was tried in Hlusk on charges of “insulting a police officer”, the Mayday human rights project reported.

The complaint against the teenager was filed by the Hlusk District Commission on Juvenile Affairs of the Hlusk District Executive Committee. The document stated that “the girl, a 10th-grade student at one of the educational institutions in Hlusk, needs special education conditions.”

According to the press service of the Hlusk District Court, the schoolgirl “was repeatedly considered at meetings of the Commission on Juvenile Affairs in connection with missing classes without good reason, and was warned about the inadmissibility of such behavior”.

The basis for the criminal case was the fact that in February 2024, the girl allegedly “by making an offensive video posted on the Internet, committed an intentional insult to a government official in the person of an employee of the internal affairs bodies, that is, a crime under Article 369 of the Criminal Code”.

In addition, she was also charged with an administrative offense for “insulting” (Article 10.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses) the director of one of the institutions in Hlusk.

At the hearing in the Hlusk District Court, both the girl herself and her parents spoke out against the charges.

However, the court came to the “conclusion that preventive measures do not bring results” and “correction of her behavior cannot be carried out at her place of residence”.

By the court's decision, the 15-year-old girl was sent to a special institution for a period of two years.

The verdict was appealed, but the Mahiliou Regional Court upheld the decision.
