Now the visit of the Kazakhstani leader to Belarus is hanging in the air.
This week, Lukashenka made another public snap at Kazakhstan in an interview with Russians. Political scientist Gaziz Abishev writes in Telegram that such statements are dictated by resentment:
“He does not want to be alone near the Russian-Ukrainian war. Therefore, Lukashenka sent a kind of greeting to President Tokayev through Russian media.”
The other day, President Tokayev sent a return greeting: “don't tell us how to live, Sasha.” The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Nurtleu invited the Belarusian ambassador Utsyupin, asked to objectively assess the position of Kazakhstan in the current conditions (“we have a very scrupulously weighed balance of interests”).
This is not the first public spat between Lukashenka and Tokayev:
“We can recall how Tokayev noted at the CSTO meeting that Lukashenka hurried too much to announce the news. Then Lukashenka suggested that Kazakhstan join the union of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, and Tokayev took it as a bad joke. The way Lukashenka demonstratively “conducted negotiations with Nazarbayev” in 2023 added up.”
At the beginning of 2024, it was said that Tokayev could visit Belarus in the third quarter. The political scientist notes that now the visit may not take place.
