Forbes: Ukraine Creating New Mechanised Brigades

This is an important sign.

The Ukrainian army is creating new mechanised brigades. This is a sign that Ukraine expects that the war will not end soon, Forbes writes.

As noted, the Militaryland resource, which tracks Ukraine's military structures, has received photos that allegedly show cadets from a new mechanised brigade within the AFU Ground Forces. The new mechanised brigades, which have been assigned 160 series numbers, will train in foreign countries and recruit a lot of cadets from Ukrainians living in those countries.

The 160th Mechanised Brigade is reportedly undergoing exercises in Poland.

The creation of new brigades depends on two things: the successful mobilisation of perhaps 10,000 or more new recruits and continued foreign support for Ukraine's war effort. Ukrainian fighters are likely to be equipped with hardware provided by Western partners, depending on the locations of their exercises.

According to the publication, the Ukrainian army has created 10 new brigades since autumn 2023: four mechanised brigades, five infantry brigades and a jaeger brigade.

The infantry brigades are the ‘lightest’ - they mostly ride on lorries. The Jaeger Brigade is a ‘middleweight’ force, consisting of trucks and light armoured vehicles. Mechanised brigades drive tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles and usually move by company with at least 10-12 tanks.

At the same time, it is not clear how many ‘160-series’ brigades the army is now creating and what kind of brigades they will be. And if we judge by the previous stage of expansion, they may be 10, the authors suggest, that is, ‘on paper’ such a number of brigades need 20,000 soldiers.

Ten brigades of soldiers would need thousands of vehicles. It is estimated that during 29 months of full-scale war Ukraine's allies allocated about 12,000 pieces of various hardware. During this time, the Defence Forces lost about 6,400 vehicles.

And if the formation time of the previous, ‘150-series’ brigades is an indicator, it may take six months or even more before the ‘160-series’ brigades are ready for action on the battlefield. In other words, these are the brigades of 2025 - units that will be able to fight in the fourth year of full-scale warfare.
