‘Durov's Arrest Could Undermine Entire Command And Control System Of Russian Troops’

The arrest of Telegram creator Pavel Durov in France has caused a nervous reaction in Russia. Propagandists compare his arrest to the arrest of the “Minister of Communications of the Russian Federation”. What is the reason for such a reaction? The Charter97.org website spoke about this with the Ukrainian military-political observer of the Information Resistance group, Oleksandr Kovalenko:

— The Russians themselves tried to arrest Durov and ban Telegram some time ago. Why are they reacting this way now? Apparently, this is due to the fact that the Russian special services had a certain approach to Pavel Durov in certain matters.

His system, the Telegram social network itself, is widely used by both the Russian special services for completely different missions (including those not directly related to their immediate activities), and the Russian military. Therefore, the Russians are now very worried.

It may turn out that foreign intelligence services will have access to all chats. It is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of storing information; it is not possible to simply delete something, the information is still saved, remains in the cloud. Given this endless storage of databases, many things that were done by Russian intelligence services will be, so to speak, open to, let's say, eyes.

— Information sensitive to the Russian regime may now end up in the hands of the West?

— Yes, of course. Moreover, the entire system of command and control of Russian troops may be undermined, which, as strange as it may sound, was carried out much more quickly through Telegram than through special communications. Therefore, many Russian “war correspondents” and bloggers, who understand a little about this and know how this process of command and control of troops is actually carried out, are also raising a serious panic in this regard.

— Do Russians have alternative types of communication at the front, besides Telegram?

— They avoid WhatsApp and Signal, Russian military personnel are not recommended to use them. VKontakte is simply inconvenient for these purposes. The only options left are special communications and special equipment.
