Homel City Executive Committee Official And Businessman Sentenced To Prison Terms For Bribery

The Chairman of the Regional Court Mikalai Bakunou spoke about the sentence handed down to the former head of the Homel City Executive Committee's land management department for accepting a large bribe.

This is about the case reported by Flagstaff: the official's name is Siarhei Karpushenka, and the well-known businessman Yury Sulim was tried for bribery along with him.

The former head received five years of imprisonment in a maximum security penal colony and a fine of 16,000 rubles. The court also resolved to collect more than 10,000 rubles from him for the benefit of the state. The businessman was sentenced to two years in a maximum security penal colony for accepting a large bribe using his official powers, and he also received a fine of 12,000 rubles.

“The official accepted construction materials and assistance in the form of construction and installation work worth more than 17,000 rubles from the director of a private enterprise, and in return contributed to a favorable resolution of an issue that was within his jurisdiction,” Bakunou said, without specifying the details of the case.

The trial was conducted by the Dobrush District Court. Why was the Homel official tried in the district center? The fact is that before receiving a position in the city executive committee, Karpushenka was deputy head of the main land management department of the Homel regional executive committee. And even earlier — head of the department for control of state property of the State Control Committee. Therefore, the criminal case may involve, for example, a plot of land in the Dobrush District given out for a bribe — at a time when the official's area of responsibility included the entire region.

Sulim is a well-known businessman, director of the private enterprise “Demolition Line”. A criminal case was opened against Yury Sulim back in late 2022 under Part 3 of Article 424 “Abuse of power or official authority”. He was accused of illegally dumping construction waste, which was seen as a violation of environmental legislation.
