Case Against Trump On Election Interference Was Reopened In The U.S.

The Federal District Court in Washington has reopened a case against U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, which was linked to interference in the 2020 election. Earlier, a panel of three judges at the appellate court level found that the ex-leader of the country could not be protected from criminal charges, and issued a brief order without a signature on the return of the case.

CBS News reports. Analysts admitted: if the Republican manages to win the election, he will probably be able to appoint his attorney general to dismiss the case.

It is noted that it was returned to the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia after the country's Supreme Court adopted by a majority vote (6-3) on July 1 that former presidents are immune from prosecution for official actions they committed while in power.

“But at the court's own motion, it was decided to return this case to the district court for further consideration in accordance with the conclusion of the Supreme Court,” the court noted.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has taken control of the case again, and must now interpret and apply the Supreme Court's ruling. In particular, it will have to decide which of Trump's alleged conduct described in Special Counsel Jack Smith's indictment is “official” and which could be subject to criminal prosecution.

According to the four-count indictment, in one of four criminal cases brought against Donald Trump last year, he is accused of illegally conspiring to hold on to the presidency by cooperating with his aides to try to overturn the election results in which he lost to Joe Biden.

Chutkan scheduled a hearing for August 16 in Washington. Analysts say such a procedural move would reopen the case with a flood of motions and potential hearings. However, the media note that due to the huge amount of work that the judge and lawyers have to do, the court will not be able to take place before the election in November, in which Trump is the Republican candidate.

“If Trump is elected president, he can appoint an attorney general who will probably order the case to be dismissed,” the journalists suggested.
