Bangladesh Army Announces Provisional Government

The commander of the army of Bangladesh, Waker-uz-Zaman, announced the resignation of the country's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The country, which has been engulfed by anti-government protests for several weeks, will be ruled by a provisional government, he announced in a TV address on Monday, August 5, Deutsche Welle reports.

On the same day, anti-government protesters in Bangladesh broke into the official residence of the 76-year-old head of government. TV footage shows thousands storming the government palace in the capital Dhaka.

The head of government and her sister previously left the residence and went "to a safer place," AFP reports, citing sources close to Hasina. A senior adviser to Hasina called her resignation “possible” in an interview with AFP. According to him, the Prime Minister wanted to record the speech, but did not have the opportunity to do it.

Meanwhile, the Prothom Alo newspaper writes that Hasina left Bangladesh and flew in a military helicopter to India. The Indian TV channel CNN-News18, citing sources, reported that Hasina landed in the Indian city of Agartala.
