The Prime Minister Who Fled Bangladesh May End Up In Belarus

The politician is currently in India.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and left the country on August 5 amid protests, is considering Belarus as one of the countries to which she may apply for political asylum. This was reported with reference to its source by the Indian Free Press Journal (FPJ).

The politician is currently in India. It was previously reported that she applied for asylum to the UK, however, according to FPJ, London made it clear that she may not receive legal protection in the event of a possible investigation into the mass protests in her country, which led to the deaths of hundreds of people.

In this regard, Sheikh Hasina is allegedly considering the United Arab Emirates, Belarus, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Finland as potential asylum countries.

In early July, students began protesting in various cities of Bangladesh against the system of job quotas for relatives of participants in the 1971 war of independence. Gradually, the situation in the country heated up, the demonstrations turned into riots, during which at least 10 thousand people were arrested. Anti-government protests broke out with renewed vigor on August 4 in the capital Dhaka and other cities. The protesters demanded the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
