Serbia Decides To Launch Compulsory Military Service Again

How long will it last?

Serbia has decided to reintroduce compulsory military service. It will last 75 days. This was announced by the country's President Aleksandar Vučić, RBK-Ukraine reports citing the N1.

On Saturday, September 14, he announced that he had signed an agreement on regular military service for 75 days. A few hours later, the Serbian government adopted a conclusion instructing the Defense Ministry to initiate the procedure for reintroducing compulsory military service. Amendments to the law must be adopted by the end of next week.

“I want to believe that the Serbian government will make this decision. I want to believe that you all understand how much we need a strong army, how much longer we will have to buy weapons, produce, create. Because we have no desire to attack anyone. And we will not do this. But our desire is to contain all those who threaten us every day,” Vučić said.

He announced this information during a speech at a ceremony to award the first officer ranks to 177 cadets of the Military Academy and the Medical Faculty of the Military Medical Academy. As the N1 writes, officials responded to the Serbian president's statement with applause.

The publication added that Vučić had recently said that the state was considering the possibility of introducing a 75-day military service, which would be mandatory for men. At the same time, women can still serve voluntarily.
