Nine major Russian cities with a combined population of 4.7 million people will fall within range of long-range Western missiles if Kyiv receives permission to strike deep into Russia, the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has reported.
According to the map published by ISW, two cities with a population of one million people will be in the strike zone: Rostov-on-Don (population 1.14 million) and Voronezh (1.046 million).
In addition, Western missiles will be able to reach Kursk (population 436 thousand people), which is currently out of range of HIMARS missile systems with a range of up to 77 kilometres. The regional centres of Orel and Bryansk, with populations of 296,000 and 373,000 respectively, and Taganrog (245,000 people), located on the coast of the Sea of Azov, could also be hit by long-range weapons.
Lipetsk (486,000 people), Smolensk (312,000) and Kaluga (329,000) are also within the range limit of the American ATACMS missiles (300 kilometres), which Ukraine calls for lifting restrictions on. At the same time, British Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of up to 250 kilometres, may not reach these cities, as follows from the ISW map.
There are at least 245 Russian military facilities on the territory falling within the range of Western long-range weapons, ISW calculated. These include 16 airfields of Russian military aviation, as well as locations where Russian units, headquarters, command posts, military factories and fuel depots are based.
