Anti-Corruption Foundation Head Volkov Trying To Shut Charter'97 Website Up

The Russian politician thinks he has a monopoly on the truth.

Leonid Volkov, one of the Anti-Corruption Foundation heads, has reacted to my article entitled ‘Pevchikh's Investigation Reminds Frau A's Revelations’ posted on the Charter'97 website.

In particular, he wrote ‘Another series, in which we learn that Israeli philanthropist Leonid Nevzlin, who is not interested in anything but Israel and Ukraine, finances the Belarusian Charter’97 website - the Charter's chief editor forgets to declare a conflict of interests, but hurries to ‘expose’ the Anti-Corruption Foundation's investigation’. Volkov also cites screenshots from the Lithuanian Cooperation for democracy foundation.

In this regard, I would like to state:

1. I remain convinced that Maria Pevchikh's investigation is very similar in style to the revelations of Frau A, the ‘expert’ of Belarusian TV.

2. I believe that the source of Pevchikh's investigation - the ‘problem solver’ from the FSB - is very similar to Frau A.'s source, the Frenchman Monsieur Michel.

3. I don't see any ‘conflict of interests’ in expressing my point of view on the Anti-Corruption Foundation's investigation and the harassment campaign against Israeli philanthropist Leonid Nevzlin, because the information about the assistance of the Lithuanian Cooperation for democracy foundation to the Charter'97 website, mentioned by Volkov, is publicly available both on the foundation's and Charter97.org websites.

For Volkov's information, the Charter'97 website has been and is being assisted by various foundations for democracy, information about which can be found at the bottom of our website page. None of these foundations has ever imposed any conditions on our work, or specified which topics we can or cannot cover.

4. According to Leonid Volkov's strange logic, it follows that the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which is located abroad of the Russian Federation and receives assistance from foreign foundations and other donors, has no right to criticise the Putin regime's foreign policy because of the conflict of interests.

5. I once again emphasise my agreement with the opinion of the PACE Special Rapporteur on Russian Democratic Forces, Eerik-Niiles Kross, that the investigation of the case involving the attack on Leonid Volkov in Vilnius should be conducted by the investigative authorities of Lithuania and Poland.
