FIDE Not To Lift Sanctions Off Belarusian Chess Players

The corresponding decision was made by the General Assembly of the organization.

The FIDE General Assembly at a meeting in Budapest refused to lift sanctions against chess players from Belarus and Russia, DW reports.

The corresponding proposal was voiced by Kyrgyzstan. 41 countries voted against it, representatives of 21 countries supported it, another 27 abstained or were absent.

At the same time, the General Assembly voted for the FIDE Council to study the possibility of admitting players from Belarus and Russia under 12 years of age or with disabilities to competitions.

Belarus and Russia were expelled from the International Chess Federation in 2022 after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine. Chess players from these countries were in fact left out of international tournaments.
