Russian Reconnaissance Plane Violates Japan's Air Borders Three Times

Japanese fighter jets gave it a warning salvo.

A Russian spy plane violated Japanese airspace on Monday. Japanese fighter jets brought up to intercept it fired a warning salvo of signal flares at it. Japan has not taken such measures for more than 60 years.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a Russian military Il-38 intruded into Japanese airspace from the north, off the island of Hokkaido, three times in one day. The Japanese Air Force sent the Russian aircraft warnings and demands to leave their ‘air.’ On the third time, Japanese Air Force fighter jets fired signal flares.

Japan's Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said the Russian plane did not perform any dangerous actions. Nevertheless, Tokyo strongly protested to Moscow and demanded no more such incidents. The Russian Defence Ministry has not yet commented on the incident.

This is the first case of warning salvos by Japan's self-defence forces since 1958.
