US Sending Additional Forces To Middle East

US Sending Additional Forces To Middle East

Washington has sent another aircraft carrier.

Today, the Pentagon announced the reinforcement of the grouping in the region. The size of the reinforcements was not disclosed ‘for security reasons.’

‘Due to increased tensions in the Middle East, we are sending a small number of additional U.S. troops as a precautionary measure to strengthen our presence in the region,’ Pentagon spokesman Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters.

There are now about 40,000 US troops in the Middle East. It's not clear what kind of reinforcement we're talking about, but an entire aircraft carrier group departed Norfolk today.

The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier has been undergoing maintenance and modernisation at local shipyards for more than a year after a tour of duty in the Mediterranean. Last week, U.S. Navy officials said it would sail to the Middle East.

Today it became known that it had sailed. The aircraft carrier group includes, in addition to the Harry S. Truman itself, three missile ships: the USS Gettysburg cruiser and two destroyers: the USS Stout and USS Jason Dunham. In total, we are talking about 6,500 sailors.
