Russian Warship Opens Fire On Norwegian Vessel

The incident took place in the Arctic.

A Russian warship demanded that a Norwegian fishing vessel leave an area in the Arctic Ocean, and when it did not, it opened warning fire. This was reported by the captain of the damaged vessel, Eystein Orten, writes The Moscow Times.

According to him, he and his crew of five collided with the large anti-submarine ship of the Russian Navy, the Admiral Levchenko, on September 12. “They called me on the radio: ‘This is a Russian warship, you need to leave this area.’ I replied that this was out of the question,” Orten recounted the conversation.

Then the 163-meter warship rushed toward the 15-meter fishing boat, blaring its horn and firing a warning shot, which exploded in the water near the Norwegian vessel. "It was a huge explosion, our boat was shaking," Orten said, adding that they quickly sailed to a safe distance.

A spokesman for the Norwegian Armed Forces' Joint Headquarters confirmed that radio communications had taken place between the Russian warship and the Norwegian fishing vessel, but no warning shot had been fired.

The incident took place in Norway's exclusive economic zone in the Barents Sea, which is shared between Norway and Russia. Russian forces had previously conducted exercises and launched missiles in the Norwegian economic zone, angering local fishermen.
