This is the fourth birthday in a row, which the Nobel laureate celebrates behind bars.
The founder and head of the Human Rights Centre ‘Viasna’ Ales Bialiatski turned 62 on September 25. This is the fourth birthday in a row, which Ales celebrates behind bars.
We remind you that the founder and head of the Human Rights Centre ‘Viasna’ was detained on July 14, 2021. He was accused of ‘smuggling’ and ‘financing of group actions, grossly violating public order’, sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ales Bialiatski did not plead guilty to any of the articles that were charged by the court.
In December 2022, already behind bars, Ales Bialiatski was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. His wife Natallia Pinchuk received the award.
In May 2023, the leader of ‘Viasna’ was transferred to the penal colony No. 9 in Horki, where prisoners, especially those on political charges, are subjected to real torture.
The Charter97.org team joins the birthday greetings and wishes Ales Bialiatski a speedy release.
