Lavrov Announced Russia's Recognition Of North Korea's Nuclear Status

The Russian minister stressed that the countries are once again "confronting a common enemy."

Russia considers the issue of North Korea's "denuclearization" closed, taking into account the "new realities" in the sphere of global and regional security, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We understand the strong position of our Korean friends that the basis for ensuring their own independence and security is a nuclear missile shield and other self-defence measures," he said.

Lavrov also spoke of "deep, sincere trust" between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, based on "a common understanding and coincidence of assessments of the international situation." The minister stressed that the countries are once again "confronting a common enemy," and assured that Russia will consistently strengthen "friendship and cooperation with the fraternal Korean people."

The DPRK announced that it had nuclear weapons in early 2005. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Pyongyang currently has 50 ready nuclear warheads, Russia has 5,580, the United States has 5,044, China has 500, France has 290, Great Britain has 225, India has 172, Pakistan has 170, and Israel has 90.
