Lieutenant Colonel Loses His Rank Over Weight-Loss Product In Belarus

He did not act alone.

On August 30, a court in Brest sentenced three people found guilty of smuggling drugs worth almost a million rubles, the press service of the Brest Regional Court reported. The smugglers were transporting a well-known drug used for weight loss from Poland and used a scheme to distribute the goods, Zerkalo reports.

Two men and a woman wanted to transport a large batch of the drug Ozempic from Poland to Russia. To do this, they looked for people traveling to Belarus and offered to take the drug with them, allegedly for personal use.

Ozempic is a drug created and produced by the Danish company Novo Nordisk for people over 18 years old with type 2 diabetes. Its known side effect is weight loss. It is produced in the form of dosing syringes similar to writing pens.

As a result, 378 packages of Ozempic worth over 565,500 rubles were distributed in Poland. They were transported across the border in Brest on October 18-21, 2023. One of the group members paid people to transport the drug, “taking and storing the drug at her place of residence in Brest,” the court reported. For this, she received at least 100 euros from another participant.

The third defendant also collected and stored Ozempic at his home in Brest. He acted according to the same scheme with the distribution of goods before the border. On October 19-29, a batch of 254 packages worth 375,100 rubles was sent to him.

At the trial, all three partially admitted guilt in the charges brought against them, and the third defendant did not admit guilt in certain episodes. In addition, the court recognized as mitigating circumstances the presence of a minor child and the fact that the woman voluntarily paid the income obtained by criminal means.

As a result, the Leninski District Court of Brest issued a verdict on drug smuggling committed by a group of people by prior conspiracy (Part 3 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code). One of the men and the woman were found guilty. The first was sentenced to six years in a high-security penal colony with a fine of 12,000 rubles, but an amnesty was applied and the term was reduced by one year.

The woman was sentenced to five years in prison with the same fine, but with a three-year deferment of the sentence. That is, if she has no offenses during this period, she will not be sent to the colony. In addition, the court ordered her not to move from Brest without permission, not to leave the city for more than a month, and to report to the police every month.

The third defendant was also found guilty, he was sentenced to six years in a reinforced-security penal colony with a one-year amnesty, a 12,000 ruble fine, and was also stripped of his military rank of reserve lieutenant colonel.

The entire batch of Ozempic was confiscated.

The sentence has not entered into legal force and can be appealed and challenged.
