Why Did Putin Need To Visit Mongolia?

There are several reasons.

Putin decided to visit Mongolia, where he could face arrest under the International Criminal Court warrant. Why is this trip so important to the head of the Kremlin? Charter97.org talked to Ukrainian politician and former Verkhovna Rada deputy Boryslav Bereza about this and more:

— The visit to Mongolia was made only after the Kremlin received 100% guarantees that Putin would not be detained. And he needed a visit to a country that ratified the Rome Statute, but would not fulfill its obligations. This is what happened.

In addition, one more thing should be noted — Putin's visit was not only to slap the International Criminal Court in the face, but also for personal interests, which include gas sales, cooperation, and much more.

Recently, Gazprom has become deeply unprofitable, and now Putin is interested in saving this company. If in 2021 Gazprom was profitable and brought in mega-profits, today official reports show huge losses. Therefore, an attempt is now being made to save the company and other projects that help Putin personally enrich himself, and Gazprom is just his pocket structure.

It should also be understood that countries that are close to China are quite important for the Kremlin's geopolitical games. Therefore, Mongolia is important for Putin in the context of his relations with Beijing.

— Will the International Criminal Court's order be valid, or has the precedent with Mongolia shown that international justice will not work?

— When Putin was planning a visit to South Africa, the head of the country said that he could come. But the court said that he could come, but would be detained and extradited to the International Criminal Court. After that, Putin canceled his trip to South Africa, but in Mongolia he received guarantees.

This once again shows that, unfortunately, most agreements that were considered classic guarantees of security in the world are now under threat. It can be said that the destruction of the work of such institutions began after 2014, when Putin unleashed a war against Ukraine.

Here is an absolutely complex story, which so far shows Putin's victory over international law. Unfortunately, this must be acknowledged, as well as conclusions must be drawn and what the reaction to such actions of Mongolia will be. If Mongolia gets away with everything and there are no consequences for it, then in fact it will be possible to say that every country that considers it advantageous to ignore its obligations will do so.

— Is the idea of seeking an arrest warrant for Lukashenka popular in the Belarusian opposition? Will this be an effective method?

— In terms of the information component — of course. This will be another slap in the face, which will once again show the attitude of the international community to the mustachioed dictator. But in terms of the effectiveness of punishment — not yet.

Moreover, let's be honest, how many similar decisions of the International Criminal Court have been executed to say that it is effective? Having looked at the statistics, we can unfortunately say that it is, alas, ineffective. Therefore, even in relation to Russia's war against Georgia, several small fry were appointed as guilty, and not the Russian leadership or Russia. Therefore, here we must clearly understand that there are our desires, and there is reality, which so far shows the ineffectiveness of this institution.
