Thousands Of Belarusian Cars Trapped

They can't be taken out of Klaipeda.

It is impossible to take out of the Klaipeda port the cars from the United States, located there since summer. This was reported by the Belarusian TV: if Belarusian journalists are to be believed, it's about 4000 cars. The head of the Lithuanian Association of Sea Transport Companies, Vaidotas Shileika, confirmed this fact.

‘Perhaps it's actually true. The cars that the owners cannot take away are parked at the port or at other car parks in Klaipeda,’ DELFI writes, citing Vakarų ekspresas. According to Shileika, there are cases when they try to load these cars onto ships and take them to Belarus by other routes, however, this is not only difficult to do, but also expensive.

‘They try to take them out in other ways - load them on ships again, take them across the Black Sea, but in such cases, additional documents are needed, costs increase. This is a problem for the owners,’ said Shileika.

The Lithuanian customs said that it would not comment on the information of the Belarusian TV. However, the customs reminded that since June 3, when transporting cars no older than 5 years, one should present the manufacturer's declaration - a document that guarantees that the transaction will not be used to circumvent sanctions.

‘The seller confirms in the document that he knows the seller and the buyer in a third country, and the transaction is beyond doubt that the current law on sanctions will not be violated,’ informed the customs.

Since July, Belarus has banned the export of cars, depending on their technical characteristics, for example, engine power. A declaration of the manufacturer is also required for transit of cars. The Belarusian TV reports that after closing the way of transporting cars from the U.S. through Klaipeda, it will be done through Turkey or Kazakhstan, but in this case, the transportation will cost several thousand dollars.

Belarusians also complain that they have to pay from 5 to 20 euros a day for car parking in Klaipeda.

The control over transiting cars through Lithuania was introduced after it became known that this route was being used to deliver cars to Russia to circumvent sanctions.
