Russia Stops Funding Separatists From Abkhazia
Sergey Shamba

Payments to public sector employees have been stopped.

Russia has stopped social payments to doctors, teachers and employees of the separatist security services in so-called Abkhazia since September 1, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the self-proclaimed republic Sergey Shamba said, the Radio Liberty website writes.

According to him, the issue was discussed at a meeting between the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Russia Dmitry Kozak and the "President" of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania in Moscow in August.

"The issue was that our failure to fulfil our obligations could entail certain sanctions, which have already begun to be implemented since September 1," he said.

Shamba announced the end of funding while commenting on scans of the minutes of the meeting between Kozak and Bzhania that appeared on social media.

One of the points stated that Russia would suspend financial aid to Abkhazia until the “republic” fulfilled three of Moscow’s demands: ratify the agreement on mutual recognition of court and arbitration decisions; ensure the entry into force of the agreement on the implementation of investment projects by Russian legal entities on the territory of Abkhazia; and lift restrictions on the commercial real estate market for Russian investors.
