Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk's Health Condition Dramatically Deteriorates
PALINA SHARENDA-PANASIUK

Relatives of the political prisoner are alarmed.

The health condition of the European Belarus civil campaign activist, political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk has sharply deteriorated. This was reported to Charter97.org by her husband, Andrei Sharenda:

‘They reported back from the Homel pre-trial detention centre that Palina is just sounding the alarm, she is complaining of sharp pains in the side of her abdomen, which go to her back. She can't sit or sleep well because of these pains, Palina is suffering from these pains. As far as I understand, she does not receive proper medical care in the pre-trial detention centre.

Not so long ago we became aware of Palina's serious diagnosis, it is chronic pancreatitis of medium severity. I have already consulted with doctors, such pains are characteristic for relapses of this disease, it means that her health is deteriorating further.

This is very disturbing news, we are just alarmed and ask everyone to speak out about it and do everything possible to ensure that Palina is provided with medical help.

Today Palina's lawyer was supposed to visit her and find out about her health condition, but as it turned out, she had been transferred from the Homel pre-trial detention centre to the Rechytsa temporary detention centre. Allegedly for investigative actions. But there is no need to carry out these actions involving Palina's transfer. The only meaning of these actions is just to humiliate and weaken a person. Staying in the Rechytsa temporary detention centre is very difficult and very painful for Palina.

I would like to add that last year Palina was already placed in the Rechytsa temporary detention centre. Allegedly for some investigative actions. Protesting against the conditions of detention in the isolation cell, she then went on hunger strike, because the conditions in the Rechytsa temporary detention centre are much worse than in the punishment cell of the colony. There is no toilet, no washbasin, no mattress and linen, and the bunks are metal plates like those in Akrestsina, and it is impossible to sleep on them. Palina has to sleep on the concrete floor, the cell is very humid and there are a lot of bedbugs, which do not give rest neither day nor night.

In fact, these conditions are simply torture. Therefore, I ask all humanitarian and human rights organisations to do everything possible to ensure that Palina receives the necessary medical care and is released for normal treatment’.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was detained on January 3, 2021. The law enforcers broke down the door of the flat, conducted a search, confiscated a number of things, and Palina was detained and taken in handcuffs to the temporary detention centre. She was later transferred to a pre-trial detention centre.

On June 9, 2021, the Maskouski District Court of Brest sentenced her to two years in a penal colony, after which the term was added several times.

Over the years, she was placed in the punishment cell several times and was also stayed in a ward-type room for six months. Palina is in complete isolation. The European Belarus activist's health badly deteriorated in the colony.
