Mass Trial Of Protesters Begins In Brest

11 people are on trial at once.

Another mass trial of protesters is underway in Brest. This time, 11 people are being tried at once, accused of “gross violation of order” on August 10, 2020. This is already the seventh group of people tried under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code, Viasna Brest reports.

The defendants include Illia Sabko, Aliaksandr Zaitsau, Mikalai Kaplyuk, Kiryl Yautushnik, Mikalai Misyuk, Artur Zaremba, Dzmitry Lysyuk, Aleh Bondaruk, Mikhail Veramchuk, Dzmitry Salaveika, and Dzianis Yakavenka. The case began to be heard today in the Brest District Court under the chairmanship of Judge Siarhei Maruchak.

Earlier, the law-enforcement agencies reported the detention of some of them. Thus, at the end of March 2024, a video was published in which Dmzitry Salaveika said that he lived in Zhabinka and went to protest on August 10, 2020 in Brest because he was dissatisfied with the election results.

In April 2024, the law-enforcers announced the arrest of Dzianis Yakovenka and Dzmitry Lysyuk, and in July 2024 they reported the arrest of Illia Sabko. In the videos, Lysyuk and Sabko stated that on August 10, 2020 in Brest they were “standing on the roadway”.

However, it is worth noting that these statements were made under pressure, and the real circumstances of the case may be completely different. The trial is ongoing, and it is not yet known what its outcome will be.
