Polish Court Arrests High-Ranking KGB Officer

Three citizens of Belarus were arrested in absentia.

The District Court in Warsaw has arrested in absentia three citizens of Belarus in the case of Ryanair Athens-Vilnius flight, which was grounded in Belarus in 2021 on the pretext of an explosive device.

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the decision on the arrest in absentia was taken on September 4. It concerns the former director of Belaeronavigatsia, Leanid Chura, the head of the control shift, Yauhen Tsyhanou, as well as an unnamed high-ranking KGB officer.

The National Prosecutor's Office is charged with an act of terror: taking control of a Ryanair aircraft by deception (Article 166 of the Polish Criminal Code) and illegal deprivation of liberty of passengers and crew members (Article 180 of the Polish Criminal Code).

The publication says that the 42-year-old dispatcher who fled to Poland with valuable evidence, including recordings from the flight control centre made on his phone, helped to establish the circumstances of the plane's landing. The investigation was conducted for three years by the National Prosecutor's Office and the Internal Security Agency.
