US, Allies Impose Sanctions On Maduro Regime
NICOLÁS MADURO

After the inauguration of the Venezuelan ruler.

On Friday, the United States imposed new sanctions on eight Venezuelan officials. At the same time, the United States increased the reward for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $25 million, right on the day of his inauguration for a third term.

This is reported by Reuters.

The new restrictions are the latest in a series of punitive measures by the outgoing Biden administration against the Maduro government, following the July elections, which his Socialist Party and the National Electoral Council claimed he won.

As Washington imposed the new sanctions, Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the inauguration on January 10 illegal, saying the United States “does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as the president of Venezuela.”

The US action was coordinated with a statement from Britain and the EU targeting 15 Venezuelan officials, including members of the National Electoral Council and security forces. Canada also imposed sanctions on Venezuela.

“The United States stands with our like-minded partners in solidarity with the Venezuelan people’s vote for new leadership and rejects Maduro’s fraudulent claims of victory,” said Acting Deputy Treasury Secretary Bradley Smith.

Reuters notes that Maduro and his aides have always rejected US and other sanctions, saying they are illegal and amount to “economic warfare” designed to hurt Venezuela.

“The outgoing United States government does not know how to take revenge on us,” Maduro said in his inauguration speech.
