US President Joe Biden has discussed possible strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities with his national security team. However, he did not give an order.
This is reported by Axios.
According to the publication, the White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan gave President Biden options for a potential US attack against Iran's nuclear facilities. It is about the case if the Iranians take steps to create nuclear weapons before January 20. All of this took place in a meeting a few weeks ago that has remained secret until now.
Axios notes that a US strike against Iran's nuclear facilities would be a huge risky undertaking on the part of a president who has promised he will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, but who also faces the prospect of handing over a new conflict to his successor. Sources said Biden did not give the green light to strike during the meeting and has not done so since.
‘Biden and his national security team discussed various options and scenarios during the meeting, which took place about a month ago, but the president has not made a final decision,’ the report said.
A US official familiar with the matter said the White House meeting was not prompted by new intelligence and was not meant to end with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decision by the President of the United States. Instead, it was part of a ‘reasonable scenario planning’ discussion on how the US should respond if Iran takes steps such as reflecting uranium enrichment to 90 per cent purity before January 20.
Another source said the White House is not currently actively discussing possible military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Some of Biden's top aides say that two trends - the acceleration of Iran's nuclear programme and the weakening of Iran and its proxies in the war with Israel - taken together give Biden the need and opportunity to strike.
The publication adds that Iran's nuclear programme has advanced significantly during Biden's time in office, making Iran effectively a ‘nuclear weapons state.’
In particular, Iran has increased its uranium enrichment level to 60%, which is close enough to the 90% level needed to produce a nuclear weapon, and modern Iranian centrifuges can achieve this in a matter of days.
At the same time, even if Iran decided to build a bomb, it would need to develop a nuclear explosive device or warhead. Israeli intelligence estimates that this would take at least a year.
