Failed Attempt To Arrest South Korea's President Shown On Video
YOON SUK YEOL

The situation around the residence remains tense.

On Friday, January 3, South Korean investigators suspended attempts to detain President Yoon Suk Yeol at his residence. The attempted arrest came after the politician briefly declared martial law in the country and was impeached.

According to CNN and BBC, a large number of police officers were stationed outside the house even before the sun rose over Seoul. Meanwhile, a crowd of Yoon's fans gathered to prevent his arrest.

Around 10:00 a.m. local time, a group of law enforcers - about 80 police officers and investigators from the Anti-Corruption Office (CIO) - managed to sneak past the military into the compound. However, there they were stopped by the Presidential Security Service.

After several hours of efforts (or rather negotiations and clashes of ‘varying intensity’), the investigators foiled attempts to contact Yoon, saying that the ‘prolonged standoff’ had made an arrest ‘virtually impossible.’

They declared the operation terminated, citing human security risks, and noted that they were met by a ‘living wall’ of about 200 people.

The failed arrest attempt is likely to inspire Yoon's fans to hold further rallies.

The president's security chief has now been charged with obstruction of justice. It is not clear what law enforcement officials' next steps will be, but investigators have time until January 6 to enforce the arrest warrant.

As of Friday morning, the situation around the residence remained tense, police officers were on duty in the streets and citizens continued to rally to support Yoon.
