The dictator's worst nightmare is coming true.
Since the beginning of 2025, the presidency of the European Union has passed to Poland, and Belarus has assumed the temporary presidency of the EAEU.
"Poland's presidency is quite an important thing, but I would not exaggerate its significance, because to a certain extent, this presidency is formal," Salidarnasc quotes historian and political observer Alexander Friedman. "Obviously, Poland will use the opportunity to promote some topics during these six months, but we know how decisions are made in the European Union.
Warsaw can propose some topics, but to what extent others will support it is an open question. And yet, for democratic Belarus, this is an important event, because Poland is much more interested in Eastern Europe in principle and in Belarus in particular than Hungary.
For Lukashenka, this event is unpleasant in the sense that now he is clearly counting on improving relations with Europe. And the presidency of Poland, the country that is particularly critical of his regime, is not very pleasant here, he understands this.”
