Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan demands punishment for those responsible for the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane, which was flying from Baku to Grozny and crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, Interfax reports.
"I can say with confidence that the blame for the fact that Azerbaijani citizens died in this disaster lies with the representatives of the Russian Federation. And we demand justice, we demand punishment for those responsible, we demand complete transparency and human behavior," he said on Monday at a meeting with family members of the crew killed in the plane crash and the surviving flight attendants.
According to him, the Kover Operation in Grozny, which means the closure of airspace, was announced after the plane was shot down.
"The attempts of Russian state bodies to hush up the incident and defend absurd versions cause us to be surprised, regretful and justifiably indignant at the same time," the president noted.
The head of state emphasized that "if measures had been taken promptly to close the airspace over the city of Grozny, the rules of ground handling had been observed and coordination between the armed forces and civil services of the Russian Federation had been established, this tragedy could have been avoided."
According to him, the process of decoding the black boxes is currently underway.
"I am confident that soon we will learn the preliminary results, and everything will fall into place, the whole picture of the tragedy that occurred will be known. And this, naturally, will be an important moment in the matter of a full investigation of this tragedy and the punishment of those guilty of it," the head of state added.
