First Time In History: Ukrainian F-16 Pilot Sets Record For Number Of Missiles Downed In One Sirtie

He destroyed six enemy cruise missiles in one combat sortie.

A Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilot set a record for shooting down enemy missiles during one of the mass attacks of the Russian Federation on Ukraine. He destroyed six enemy cruise missiles in one combat sortie.

This was reported by the head of the public relations service of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Yuriy Ihnat.

According to Ihnat, we are talking about the large-scale shelling on December 13, when the Russians launched almost 200 drones, “Kinzhals”, and more than 90 different missiles at Ukraine. During such shelling, the F-16's main target is precisely cruise missiles.

As Ihnat said, the F-16 pilot first used all four air-to-air missiles. Thus, he shot down four Russian cruise missiles. However, the pilot noticed another target and decided to use an aircraft cannon.

“Shooting down cruise missiles with a cannon is very risky due to the high speed of the target and the danger of detonation. But I acted as the instructors in the US taught me, and I managed to hit. As it turned out, two missiles that were flying next to each other were destroyed at the same time,” the pilot himself told Ihnat.

The Air Force noted that this case is unique: for the first time in history, an F-16 pilot destroyed six cruise missiles in one sortie, two of them with an aircraft cannon.

At the same time, Ihnat noted that despite the fact that Ukraine was given not the most modern modifications of the F-16, Ukrainian pilots demonstrate exceptional skills every day, making the most of the available equipment.
