Russia will lose $6.5 billion in annual revenue.
Russia has suffered one of the biggest and most expensive defeats due to Ukraine's decision to stop transporting Russian gas through its territory. This was stated by White House adviser John Kirby at a briefing on Wednesday, 8 January, Ukrinform reports.
He noted that Russia could lose about $6.5 billion a year because of this.
‘This would clearly completely deprive Russia of about $6.5 billion in annual revenue generated from gas sales to Europe. This is one of the biggest and most expensive defeats for Moscow,’ he said.
Kirby added that the US welcomed ‘Ukraine's decision and its resolve.’ The adviser reminded that when Russian dictator Vladimir Putin first came to power 25 years ago, more than 130 billion cubic metres of gas was transported to Europe through Ukraine. Today, this volume is equal to zero.
At the same time, he noted that the USA is trying to increase energy supplies to Europe. 50 per cent of liquefied natural gas imports to Europe come from the USA.
