Academy Of Sciences Ignores Lukashenka

The dictator has been promised the domestic electric car for years.

The order of Aliaksandr Lukashenka to start mass production of Belarusian electric cars from 1 January 2025 has not been fulfilled, writes the site of Euroradio. So far the matter concerns the release of a ‘pilot batch’ consisting of five electric cars, said Deputy Director General of the United Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences Aliaksandr Bialevich in the ‘Economy of Belarus’ magazine. The electric cars are based on the model of Belgee X50.

It was planned to produce prototypes as early as the end of 2024 (and to conduct the necessary tests), but something went wrong. As a result, it was not possible to meet the deadline outlined by Lukashenka. Bialevich says that ‘the process of creating a domestic electric car is in the final stage’. That's why there is no talk about mass production yet, the year 2025 is mentioned without an exact date. ‘The task is to calculate how much it will cost under the conditions of mass production,’ says the deputy general director of the United Institute of Machine Building.

‘The whole construction is Belarusian, microelectronics is purchased, cells for the battery are Chinese, metal is Russian,’ continues Aliaksandr Bialevich. ‘The battery, motor, inverter, switching module, electronics are domestic. In principle, we can say that the electric car is Belarusian in terms of added value’.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka ordered to start mass production of electric cars from the beginning of 2025 a year ago - in January 2024. ‘Here is a year for you. Buy the machine you need, put it up and start making it. By 1 January you must produce the result,’ he then set the task to the government, which asked for more time - a year and a half.

The government and the Academy of Sciences have been promising Lukashenka a domestic electric car for many years (and even in 2022 they showed a strange, unfinished version of it). In autumn 2023, he suspected that he was being cheated with this project. And last year a working group was set up to study the activities of the National Academy of Sciences.
