Following Trump's rebuke, Orban began looking for alternatives to Russian energy resources.
Hungary is actively negotiating the start of natural gas imports from Turkmenistan. According to State TV and Radio of Turkmenistan, the relevant statement was made by Deputy State Secretary of Hungary Adam Stifter following the meeting of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Hungarian commission on economic cooperation in Ashgabat.
"In the field of energy, we count on Turkmenistan as a reliable partner. Hungary depends on natural gas imports from different countries, so we also look at Turkmenistan with great hope and hope that Turkmenistan will become a gas supplier to Europe, more precisely to Hungary, in the near future," Stifter said.
Hungarian Deputy State Secretary for EU Affairs Peter Holicza specified that the sides discussed specific areas of cooperation during the talks. "We discussed natural gas trade between Turkmenistan and Hungary, potential hydrocarbon exploration and development projects on the Caspian Sea shelf, as well as joint initiatives on renewable energy sources in the future," he said.
Holicha also confirmed the Hungarian side's plans to take part in the International Energy Forum to be held in Turkmenistan in October. "We will definitely try to take part in this event to discuss further steps and opportunities to expand energy cooperation both in Turkmenistan and in the region as a whole," he said.
In March, former Turkmen president and chairman of the Khalk Maslahaty (People's Council) Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said the state was ready to supply Europe with gas. According to him, cooperation between Ashgabat and Europe is beneficial to both sides.
