Fitzo Did Not Attend EU Summit Due To Health Problems
Robert Fitzo

The deterioration in health is due to an assassination attempt in May 2024.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo will not attend the informal meeting of European Union leaders in Copenhagen due to health problems related to the May 2024 assassination attempt. This was reported by Bloomberg.

Fizo's decision to withdraw was announced as the event was about to begin in the Danish capital. His spokesman Aleksandar Kovacs said the prime minister was away due to "deteriorating health conditions related to the assassination attempt."

In May 2024, 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula assassinated the Slovakian prime minister in the town of Gandlová. Fitzo was seriously wounded, including in the abdomen, but survived. Cintula pleaded guilty and said he wanted to harm the prime minister because he disagreed with the government's policies, but did not intend to kill.

This is not the first time Fico has missed events due to health problems amid the assassination attempt. For example, in April 2025, the prime minister did not show up for an interview with former Czech President Milos Zeman. According to the latter, the Prime Minister felt ill because of an injury. At the same time, Fico published a video message on social networks and said that the wounds received during the assassination attempt in the spring of 2024 are still "troublesome."

In addition, on May 1, Fico refused to attend the Labor Day celebrations in Slovakia and also canceled his participation in the installation of the May tree in Velky Zaluzhy. At the same time, he was going to express solidarity with the workers by working the night shift at a bakery in Nitra in the west of the republic, but he also failed to do so.
