The laureate turned out not to be Trump.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced the winner of the 2025 Peace Prize. It was awarded to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado Parisca "for her continuous work to promote the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

The Nobel Foundation's news press office announced this.

Maria Corina Machado Parisca is a Venezuelan politician and social activist, philanthropist, and member of the Venezuelan National Assembly (2011-2014). Founder and former head of the charity organization Sumate.

Candidate for the Venezuelan presidency in the 2012 elections. Opposition, democracy activist, and opponent of the socialist government of Nicolas Maduro.

Machado was a leading figure during the 2014 Venezuelan protests against the government of Nicolas Maduro.

On June 30, 2023, the Venezuelan government disqualified an opposition Venezuelan politician from holding office for 15 years because of her leadership in anti-government protests.

What is special about the Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prizes were established by the will of Swedish inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). His most famous invention was dynamite, which brought him considerable profit.

After Nobel's death, his fortune was used to create a fund, the proceeds of which are distributed annually to outstanding figures in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and the world. The first award was given in 1901.

The economics prize, founded by the Bank of Sweden in the late 1960s, was later added to the list.

The amount of the prize varies depending on the income of the Nobel Foundation. This year's cash award for the Nobel is set at 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.05 million).

Each winner receives a cash award, a diploma and a gold medal. The award can only be given to individuals, except for the Peace Prize, which can also be given to organizations.

Who has been nominated for a "Nobel" in 2025

There were 338 nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, of which 244 were individuals and 94 were organizations. This is a significant increase from last year's nominees.

The highest number was recorded in 2016, when 376 candidates were nominated.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was Jan. 31.

The list of nominees remains secret for 50 years and self-nominations are not allowed.

A number of international organizations and human rights activists have been named among possible contenders for the current Nobel Peace Prize, as Reuters wrote. Among them are the UNHCR, UNICEF, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms initiative.

Individual candidates include Hong Kong activist Chow Han-tung, who is under arrest for participating in democracy protests, and Canadian human rights activist Irwin Cotler, known for his fight for human rights and opposition to anti-Semitism. NATO and the International Criminal Court are also mentioned.

Trump wanted to win the award

Obsessed with winning the Nobel Peace Prize is U.S. President Donald Trump, but his chances of winning have been called slim, particularly because of political controversy.

Many countries and organizations have nominated Trump for the peace prize, although critics believe his actions do not meet the criteria for the laureate.

Trump said it would be an "insult" to the US if he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize, because, according to him, he was the one who "stopped seven global conflicts." The politician does not hide his envy of former US President Barack Obama, who became a laureate in 2009, and ironically said that the award was given to him only "for winning the election."
