Parties, Online Games And FSB Guards: How Dictator Assad And His Family Live In Moscow
Bashar al-Assad

The former head of Syria and his family have settled in elite skyscrapers in the Moscow City neighborhood.

Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator overthrown in 2024, is living quietly in Moscow under the protection of the Russian security services. According to the German publication Die Zeit, the former head of Syria and his family have settled in elite skyscrapers in the Moscow City neighborhood and lead a relaxed lifestyle, spending hours playing online games.

Assad's family owns about 20 luxury apartments in the Moscow City skyscrapers, according to the German publication's sources. These buildings are populated mostly by politicians and foreigners, and security and control on their premises have been tightened.

After Syrian rebels led by current interim president Ahmad al-Shaaraa entered Damascus in December 2024, the Kremlin urgently evacuated Assad and his entourage to Moscow. Since then, the life of the dictator's family has been under strict rules set by the Russian authorities.

As Russian diplomat Elbrus Kutrashev noted, the Assads are banned from any political activity and public appearances. In exchange for loyalty, Moscow guarantees their safety and shelter from extradition.

Assad lives alternately in luxury apartments in Moscow City and in a classified villa in the Moscow region. His security is handled by the FSB, which provides personal security for the former dictator on a par with other odious figures hiding in Russia.

Assad's younger brother Maher lives at the Four Seasons Hotel Moscow, where he regularly hosts parties, according to a former Syrian army officer who escaped to Europe and still keeps in touch with former coworkers.

Bashar al-Assad himself spends most of his time in three apartments with their own shopping center, preferring online gaming and privacy.

The ex-dictator's family continues to enjoy Russian patronage. His son, 23-year-old Khafiz Assad, defended his PhD in analytic and algebraic number theory at Lomonosov Moscow State University in November 2024.

In February 2025, he first appeared in a video in central Moscow, breaking the family's established rules, but the post was soon removed.
