The race is on.
Unmanned aerial vehicles dominate the skies on the Russian-Ukrainian war front. And in their shadow, the use of ground-based robotic systems by both sides is becoming more and more widespread. About this writes Forbes.
The author of the publication notes that as a result of the active use of UAVs, the so-called kill zone has formed on the front, which can reach 25 kilometers deep from the contact line. Under such conditions, logistics tasks have to be assigned to uncrewed vehicles in order to reduce personnel losses when delivering everything necessary to the front line.
The point is that the same FPV drones are difficult to dislodge soldiers from the settlements they control. But the drones are good at attacking the transports that supply ammo and provisions to these garrisons. In fact, both sides are trying to take enemy-controlled villages and towns under drone siege. And it is in order to break such a siege that ground robotic systems have to be used.
The Web is seeing more and more videos of unmanned ground vehicles delivering supplies to the front lines - both to Russian and Ukrainian soldiers. And while the ground robots are just as vulnerable to UAV strikes as conventional pickup trucks, their loss has been without loss of life for the drivers.
According to the author of the publication, experience in building UAVs has given Ukrainian companies the opportunity to develop their own models of ground drones. Now the AFU has a wide arsenal of such robots adapted for various tasks - not only logistics, but also demining, reconnaissance and even direct fire support for troops.
