When it became known that the Israeli prime minister would not arrive, the Turkish president's plane landed in an Egyptian city.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani were going to refuse to attend a peace summit in Egypt to mark the end of the war between Israel and Hamas if Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu arrived at the event. This was reported by Turkish newspaper Milliyet and Iraq's INA news agency.
Milliyet writes that Erdogan arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh to attend the summit, but his plane did not immediately land. The president did not allow it to land after learning that Netanyahu might arrive in Egypt. When Erdogan said he would not attend the summit in that case, the Israeli prime minister's participation was canceled. After that, Erdogan's airliner circling over the Red Sea landed in Sharm el-Sheikh. The same version is cited by TGRT.
An INA source said al-Sudani also told the Egyptian and American sides that Iraq would refuse to participate in the Sharm el-Sheikh summit if Netanyahu attended. According to the agency's interlocutor, U.S. President Donald Trump tried to ensure the participation of the Israeli prime minister, but "the positions of other participants were similar to Iraq's position, and therefore Trump's attempt to bring Netanyahu to the Sharm el-Sheikh summit was not successful."
Trump is the organizer of the summit in Egypt on October 13. In the morning, the American president arrived in Israel, where he met with Netanyahu. At the same time, there were reports from the Egyptian side about the Israeli prime minister's participation in the summit, Reuters reported.
But then Netanyahu's office said that there was indeed an invitation from Trump, but the prime minister would not go to Egypt because of the proximity of the start of a Jewish religious holiday. Israel celebrates Shmini Atzeret (the final day of the Sukkot holiday) and Simchat Torah (celebrating the end of a year-long cycle of Torah readings and the beginning of a new cycle).
Hamas will not participate in the event either. Politicians from Europe and Asia are expected to attend the summit, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and others.
