The US Defense Department has developed a plan to sell or transfer long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine in case US President Donald Trump gives the green light to do so.

The author of the article notes that supplying Tomahawks would involve "enormous difficulties," as Ukraine does not have the launchers needed to launch these missiles.

Kiev would need the U.S.-made Typhon launcher to carry out the strikes, but U.S. military officials believe this would bring them closer to a "direct confrontation with Russia." The likelihood of escalation is also confirmed by the Kremlin's recent threats, which came amid much news about the Tomahawk.

The publication notes that Trump believed Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would agree to come to the negotiating table just from the mere threat of providing Tomahawks to Ukraine. The move likely signals the U.S. president's frustration with his Russian counterpart, who does not want to stop the war.

Liana Fix, an expert on Europe at the Council on Foreign Relations, believes that the decision to hand over the Tomahawk will depend on whether Putin succeeds in convincing Trump that the move will "lead to nuclear war."
