The Economist: Putin Is Losing

The strategy on the front has been a disaster for RF.

Russia's summer offensive in Ukraine has been a failure - despite unprecedented mobilization efforts and daily attacks, territorial gains on the front have been minuscule and losses have been catastrophic.

The The Economist notes that the West often emphasizes the Ukrainian Armed Forces' lack of soldiers, overlooking a key point: Russia has made virtually no progress despite tens of thousands of Russian occupiers killed.

According to data from hundreds of sources, including Western intelligence and research centers, Russia's cumulative losses have reached between 984,000 and 1.44 million by mid-October 2025, including up to 480,000 dead.

At the same time, according to estimates, it could take up to 2030 to capture even all the temporarily occupied territories, and the whole of Ukraine - even more than a century.

Comparing the losses, The Economist concludes that for every Ukrainian soldier killed, there are up to five Russian ones, and it is Russia that may be the first to face a critical shortage of manpower, despite mass mobilization.

The magazine emphasizes that Putin's strategy is exhausted, and unless things change dramatically, he will not be able to win on the battlefield.
