Belarusians Began To Drink Less

Alcohol consumption has declined for three years in a row.

According to the National Statistics Committee, the average resident of the country over 15 years old in 2024 drank 11.1 liters of pure alcohol in various drinks. Of these, 0.6 liters were unregistered alcohol. For comparison, in 2021 the figure reached the maximum in recent years - 12 liters. Thus, the current level has returned to the minimums recorded in 2016.

Regional differences are noticeable: the most drinkers are in Mogilev region - an average of 12.2 liters of alcohol per person per year. The minimum indicator is in the neighboring Gomel region - 10.6 liters.

The structure of consumption remains relatively stable: vodka and vodka products (5.6 liters) and beer (2.4 liters) account for the most. Over the last ten years, the consumption of vodka (from 9.9 to 12 liters per person) and beer (from 42 to 51 liters) has increased in physical terms. Low-alcohol beverages have increased in volume especially fast - they were drunk five times more: 5.4 liters against less than 1 liter in 2015.

Belarusians still prefer fruit wine to grape wine, but its popularity has more than halved over the decade - from 10 to 4.6 liters per capita.

As for regional preferences, Mogilev voblast leads not only in terms of overall consumption, but also in specific categories: vodka (13.2 liters) and fruit wine (7.8 liters) are drunk here the most. In Vitebsk region fruit wine is also popular (7.1 liters), and in addition, there is a record for beer - 58 liters per person per year.

In Minsk, the top three after beer and vodka are low-alcohol drinks (6.6 liters), and the fourth place was taken by grape wine (5.6 liters).
