Republican congressmen criticized the Pentagon's decision.
The leaders of the U.S. House and Senate Armed Services Committees - Mike Rogers and Roger Wicker - opposed the redeployment of part of the U.S. military contingent in Eastern Europe.
This is reported by European Truth.
The Republican congressmen said they "strongly oppose" the redeployment of a rotational brigade in Romania and a Pentagon-initiated process "that could lead to a further drawdown of U.S. troops in Eastern Europe."
They recalled that U.S. President Donald Trump recently promised not to withdraw U.S. troops from Europe.
"The President is right that the location of U.S. troops in Europe needs to be changed as NATO takes on additional strain and the nature of warfare changes. But this renewal must be broadly coordinated both within the U.S. government and with NATO," the congressmen note.
Rogers and Wicker also point out that the announced rearmament of Europe under pressure from the Trump administration takes time, and prematurely withdrawing U.S. troops from NATO's eastern flank "undermines the deterrence effect and creates the risk of further Russian aggression."
"Unfortunately, the Pentagon's decision seems uncoordinated and directly contradicts the president's strategy," they conclude.
